DESIGNER'S NOTES

This Fox & Chave silk tie features a repeat pattern of the White Rabbit after the original illustration of the character by John Tenniel for the first edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, published in 1865.

The White Rabbit is the first Wonderland character Alice encounters, famously muttering, “Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too late!” as he rushes past, sparking her curiosity and prompting her to follow him down the rabbit-hole.

In Lewis Carroll’s original story, he represents anxious authority, always concerned with time and appearances. John Tenniel’s illustration shows him dressed like a Victorian gentleman with waistcoat, gloves, and spectacles and carrying a pocket watch.

This contrast between his animal form and his formal attire adds to the surreal tone of the narrative. Tenniel’s drawing set the standard for countless later depictions, capturing both the urgency and the absurdity of the character, who is part bureaucrat, part herald, and a symbol of Wonderland’s eccentric logic.
