DESIGNER'S NOTES

A distinct Fox & Chave silk habotai scarf with a design derived from a lamp by the American designer Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933)

Tiffany’s leaded glass lamps stand as a pinnacle of American Art Nouveau design, translating the fleeting beauty of nature into permanent, luminous objects. Utilising his patented Favrile glass, Tiffany Studios captured organic forms with unprecedented colour depth and texture.

The use of stylised clematis in his lamp design exemplifies this mastery. The trailing, vining nature of the plant allowed Tiffany’s artisans, notably Clara Driscoll and the so called Tiffany Girls, to create complex, asymmetrical patterns. Broad petals in saturated blues, purples, or mottled whites wrap around the conical shades, accented by intricate filigree, beautifully mimicking the wild, climbing growth of the living vine.
